　　　人質事件解決の際に人命が失われたことにつき、アムネスティ
　　　は遺憾の意を表明する。アムネスティはこれまで72人の人質の
　　　安全とその即時無条件の釈放を要求してきたが、昨日の強行突
　　　入の結果、人質１人とMRTA側の14人、突入側２人が死亡したこ
　　　とにつき、深い哀悼の意を表する。また少なくとも人質５人が
　　　ペルー治安部隊の２００人による２２日３時半からの作戦行動
　　　中に負傷した。今回の突然の強行突入はこれまで続けられてき
　　　た平和的な解決の道を断つものだった。ペルー国内がかかえる
　　　人権問題、それにともなうフジモリ政権の政治的危機が取りざ
　　　たされている最中におこなわれた。アムネスティはMRTAが日本
　　　大使公邸を襲撃した直後から、人質行為そのものに対する非難
　　　とともに、人質全員の安全な解放を求めてきた。今回の事件に
　　　関してアムネスティは急遽リマに調査団を送ることを決定した。
　　　またペルー政府に対しても、殺害事件について完全かつ独立な
　　　調査をおこなうよう、ここに要求するものである。

Peru: Amnesty International Expresses Regret About Loss of Life During 
Operation to End Hostage Crisis

Amnesty International -- which has campaigned for the safety, and the 
unconditional and immediate release of all 72 hostages -- expressed deep 
regret for yesterday's killings of one hostage, 14 members of the Movimiento 
Revolucionario Tupac Amaru, MRTA, and two members of the Peruvian security 
forces.

     At least five hostages were also injured during the operation carried 
out by around 200 members of the Peruvian security forces which took place 
on 22 April at 3:30 pm local time in Lima.

     The surprise operation to storm the Japanese Ambassador's residence cut 
short attempts for a peaceful solution to the crisis. It took place amid 
growing reports of human rights violations in the country and a looming 
political crisis affecting President's Alberto Fujimori's Government

     Since the beginning of the 126-day long hostage crisis -- after members 
of the MRTA broke into the Japanese Ambassador's residence in Peru and held 
all those present to force a series of demands of the movement -- Amnesty 
International has campaigned for the safe release of all those held by the 
MRTA, while reiterating its condemnation for the taking of hostages.

     Amnesty International is sending a delegate to Lima in order to carry 
out relevant research about this episode. Meanwhile the organization is 
calling for full and impartial investigations into all the killings.
